Intro to Chateau de Bel Echappee Bel Blanc Bordeaux –
Chateau de Bel Echappee Blanc is a lovely mouthfilling aromatic white wine from the Entre Deux Mers region of Bordeaux.
Full tasting note and wine making –
Chareau de Bel Echappee Bel Blanc is a very textural mouthfilling wine that is very aromatic with hay and lees on the nose and white peaches and big tropical fruits on the flavoursome palate.
The grapes for Chateau de Bel Echappee Blanc are sourced from a five hectare hillside vineyard in Soussac, on clay and limestone soils in the Entre-Deux-Mers region. It is not from Château de Bel estate vines so it is not organic. It is a non vintage wine as the fruit is harvested across multiple vintages, and the aim here is for a full, fruity white rather than a lean Sauvignon style. The Muscadelle is harvested relatively early, and the Sauvignon relatively late toget the best of both varieties. It is macerated on the skins, fermented at cool temperatures and then it is kept on the lees for 6-9 months.
The producer –
The most radical producer in Bordeaux? Undoubtedly Château de Bel is the antithesis to what we’ve come to expect from this most traditional of French regions. After creating one of the first e-commerce wine businesses, winemaker Olivier Cazenave (right) and his wife Anne discovered the property in 2003, in the community of Arveyres on the banks of the Dordogne.
They have since expanded its then-dilapidated vineyards to eight hectares, as well as taken on farming those of friends and family elsewhere in Bordeaux, with one-third of a hectare in Pomerol and two hectares in Montagne Saint-Émilion. Since 2016, all vineyards are certified biodynamic and mostly planted to Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with some Malbec and Chenin Blanc. Olivier even wants to plant Riesling here one day. Wines are variously classical, experimental, natural and at times controversial.
All beautifully, purely made, as Olivier says, with “humility and common sense”.

Delivery in St Albans is FREE for orders over £85, for orders less than £85 the charge is £5.
Postal delivery of tasting tickets and vouchers is also FREE if this option is chosen.
Our standard national delivery charge is £10 and is FREE for all orders over £250. The standard delivery is next day for all orders placed by 12noon and the following day for all orders received later than that.
Arrangements in case you’re out at the time of delivery
Please leave clear instructions in the special instructions section on the checkout page so the wine can be left in a safe place to suit you. As our delivery service requires a signature then if your wine is not signed for it is left at your risk and losses are not replaceable. If instructions are not left a card will be put through your door asking you to contact the carrier to arrange re-delivery or collection within 2 days.
