Intro to Chateau Talbot St Julien Bordeaux –
Chateau Talbot is a 4th growth in the grand cru classification in the St Julien appellation in Bordeaux and has a perfumed nose and deep palate with layers of flavour.
Full tasting note and wine making –
Chateau Talbot has a dense deep ruby colour and a perfumed nose of violet and cassis with mineral tones. It is fresh and vibrant on the palate, with fine flavors of dark berries, minerals and dry herbs. This captivating Talbot has lovely length and balance.
Chateau Talbot chose to continue its tradition of vinification in wooden vats. The best grapes ferment and macerate under the excellent conditions provided by the truncated, cone-shaped wooden walls and their isothermal properties. Lined up in the cool half-light, the cellar is maintained at 16°, 14 months of aging in 50 to 60 percent new barrels originating from eight different coopers. The choice of cooper, the length of aging, and the pace of racking vary, based on the style and development of the various lots. Regular tasting of the wines determines these choices; aging is adapted to each wooden tank’s character until final blending.
The 107 hectares of the Château Talbot vineyard surround the estate house and stretch north to the border with the Pauillac appellation. Planted on a terroir of fine gravel on a core of fossil-rich limestone, there red vines -102 hectares and a small acreage of whites – 5 hectares. This vineyard’s management is one of the Médoc‘s best. Harvesting is performed by hand, with no fewer than 180 cutters. This step, crucial in the making of a great wine, is subject to numerous selective sortings. Initial grape selection is performed on the vine & the second at the winery.
The producer –
Médoc Grand Cru Classé, Château Talbot comprises 107 hectares of vineyard cultivated in the heart of the Saint-Julien commune, an outstanding appellation, as it counts no fewer than 11 classified growths. Ideally situated on the banks of the estuary of the Gironde on hilltops of alluvial gravel carried by the Dordogne River from the Massif Central and from the Pyrénées by the Garonne, Château Talbot’s terroir is exceptional.
