Intro to Jim Barry The Armagh –
Jim Barry The Armagh Clare Valley Australia is black-purple in colour, displaying a nose of lifted, aromatic, blackberry cassis, cedary oak, spice and complex, underlying savoury characters. The palate is huge and dense, with fully integrated oak yet still featuring complex notes of plum, berry fruits.
Full tasting note & wine making –
The Armagh has intense aromas of cranberry, mulberry, boysenberry and spearmint, with the underlying characters of rosemary, sage, cinnamon, cedar and black pepper. In the mouth this wine really shows its true colours and while it is still very young, the firm tannin structure plays an integral role in the overall picture. Flavours of red currants, black cherries and blueberries are in abundance, with an undercurrent of freshly turned earth and truffles in the background. The length of flavour and power in this wine, whilst still showing finesse and restraint, is what sets it at the zenith of red winemaking at Jim Barry Wines.
The name of Armagh was bestowed by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849, and named the lush rolling hills after their homeland. The vineyard was planted by Jim Barry in 1968 and lies on a north-west facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened when picked. The 2007 growing season was the driest in 24 years, meaning that vintage was much earlier than usual. The Armagh vineyard was hand-picked in early March.
The producer –
Certain names resonate strongly within the halls of Australian wine history. Jim Barry Wines is one of those names. It was Jim Barry’s drive and community spirit that helped shape South Australia’s Clare Valley as a benchmark in the world of Riesling and cemented its place as one of Australia’s premier wine regions.
Jim Barry was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, graduating as the 17th student to gain a Degree in Oenology at the famous Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947. Working for 22 years as winemaker at the Clarevale Co-operative, Jim Barry became a pioneer of Australian table wine and helped Taylors Wines establish in 1969.
Jim’s sons, Peter, Mark & John were involved in the company’s rise. Peter Barry became managing director in 1985. Today Peter’s sons Tom and Sam both work for Jim Barry Wines as winemaker and commercial manager, while daughter Olivia is works as company ambassador in the UK.
The company’s own vineyards now are at 10 locations in the Clare Valley with a 14 hectare property at Coonawarra. This access to high-quality, estate-grown fruit has been instrumental in the development of a number of prominent brands, including The Armagh Shiraz, The McRae Wood Shiraz, The Lodge Hill Shiraz, The Florita Riesling, The Lodge Hill Riesling as well as the Watervale Riesling.
