Intro to Dagaz Itatino Cinsault –

Dagaz Itatino Cinsault is a deliciously soft yet fruity and vibrant red wine.

Full tasting note and wine making –

Dagaz Itatino Cinsault is a bright, ruby red colour. On the nose it has high fruit intensity, with a lot of sour cherry and mineral notes from the granite that forms the soil. In the mouth it has soft tannins but a lot of energy in addition to good acidity, which makes it fresh and vibrant. It is very long and persistent.

The Cinsault vines that produce the fruit for this wine are 30 year old bush vines and planted at 300 metres above sea level. The fruit was hand picked and sorted before fermentation after which the wine was aged for six months, 77% was aged in stainless steel tanks and the rest in French oak barrels that were eight to ten years old to protect the freshness and verve of the wine.

The producer –

Viña Dagaz (Dagaz is a Celtic rune that means ‘the beginning of a new path’) was founded in 2015 by renowned winemaker Marco Puyo and Patricio Gomez-Barris. After many years exploring the different areas of Colchagua whilst working on behalf of other wineries Marco felt that the temperate Mediterranean climate and granitic soils of Pumanque offered a unique opportunity to create something more personal. Drawing inspiration from the granitic soils of the Côtes du Rhone, Galicia and Rioja, he wanted to create something that authentically represented the terroir. Dagaz produce high quality wines showing elegant mineral characteristics, good acidity and great structure.

Marco Puyo trained as a winemaker in Santiago and cut his teeth at the Rothschild-owned Los Vascos estate in Colchagua. Whilst at San Pedro he founded his personal project in Pumanque in 2005, planting approximately 40 hectares to Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Carmenere and Syrah.

The Pumanque vineyard is located 155 km south-west of Santiago and 34 km from the Pacific coastline. Planted on gentle granitic slopes, the climate is Mediterranean with a distinct oceanic influence and cool evenings. Marco started making small personal quantities from one or two barrels in 2009, and then officially created Dagaz with business partner Patricio Gómez-Barris in 2015.

It has been a lifetime ambition for Marco to have his own project and be his own boss. Since leaving San Pedro in 2018 he has been focussed full-time on Dagaz. The wines are quite extraordinary and are not entirely what you might expect from Colchagua. This is a warm region that tends to produce wines that are plush, sleek and opulent. Stylish wines that are true to their origin, in much the same way as wines of the Barossa Valley in Australia area. Yet at Dagaz I find something extra – a finesse and elegance that stands out. For me it is a combination of both vineyard work and Marco’s magic in the winery that allows this.
