Intro to Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Chenin Blanc –
Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Chenin Blanc – this crisp and refreshing white wine has aromas of ripe pineapple and guava that jump out of the glass.
Full tasting note and wine making –
Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Chenin Blanc Initial aromas of lime and citrus zest are beautifully intertwined with guava and tropical fruit. These flavours follow on the palate, and combined with the rich texture and elegant minerality, ensures a very long finish. The wine can be enjoyed now, on its own or with salmon, roast chicken and creamy pasta dishes, but will also mature gracefully over the next 3 to 5 years.
The grapes for this wine comes from selected vineyards in Stellenbosch and Paarl. Owing to the nature of bush vines, careful canopy management was exercised so that no bunches were exposed to excessive sunlight and an even ripening of the grapes.
A late winter with good rainfall and warmer than normal temperatures contributed to early bud break. The cold weather returned in August which slowed down bud break and thus a later start to the growing season. The 2019 summer started very warm, but became a moderate to cool vintage. Although it was very dry, these bushvine vineyards (with their deep and well established roots) looked and tasted spectacular.
All the vineyard parcels were harvested at optimum ripeness and vinified separately. All the grapes were given 12 to 24 hours extended skin contact before only the free-run juice was transferred to tank for fermentation. The wines were fermented at low temperatures with selected yeast strains to highlight each vineyards specific characteristic. After fermentation the wine was left for a further four months in contact with the lees before putting the final blend together.
The producer –
Kleine Zalze is a family owned winery situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands. Winemaking has taken place there on a small scale since 1695 but it was in 1996, when Kobus Basson and his family purchased the property, that the modern Kleine Zalze was born. In 1996 the estate’s soils were scientifically mapped, evaluated and replanted according to their specific terroir characteristics and potential. Continuous investment over more than 20 years has seen the winery evolve into one of the most awarded in Stellenbosch.
Kleine Zalze wines are marked by classical structure and complexity matched by a vibrant flavour intensity. Discernibly South African in style, they are refreshing, beautifully balanced and well suited to food. They are made according to traditional methods, with minimal cellar intervention but supported by modern winemaking equipment.
