Intro to Odfjell Armador Sauvignon Blanc –

Odfjell Armador Sauvignon Blanc is a zesty white wine full of crisp fruit flavours from the Maipo Valley.

Full tasting note and wine making –

Odfjell Armador Sauvignon Blanc has persistent aromas of citrus fruit and gooseberry and on the palate it is a crisp, zesty, lively wine full of juicy grapefruit with vibrant acidity. The cool climate of Casablanca ensures a crisp and fresh style of Sauvignon Blanc with pronounced aromatics.

The Casablanca Valley is around 323 m above sea level with a mild climate and a dry season of seven months. The annual rainfall is 380 mm between May and September. Located in the eastern part of the valley, the temperatures are mild because of breezes from the Pacific Ocean. Soil originally from granite with low fertility and good drainage.

The grapes were hand picked and bunches were crushed whole and fermentation takes around fifteen days in small 10,000 litre stainless steel tanks which are temperature controlled to preserve aromas. Selected yeasts are used. Odfjell’s stunning gravity flow winery minimizes the need to pump or agitate the juice throughout the winemaking process, gravity flow helps preserve the natural subtleties of the finished wine.

The quest of Odfjell is to make wines that are a true expression of the terroir of our vineyards. Their low yield vineyards are handled with individual care, where they handpick the grapes bringing the fruit to the cellar as intact as possible. They began planting vineyards on the estate over fifteen years ago, selecting only red varieties. Today they have 85 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, aromas of cherries, figs, violets and white fruit aromas such as apricots and pears. Carménère, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Malbec planted in Maipo. They have also acquired vineyards in Cauquenes and Curico with old vines of Carignan and Malbec where we practice organic farming. Odfjell is committed to be a leader in progressive vineyard management, dedicated to elevate the image and practice of viticulture in Chile. The aim of this work is to produce the best possible wines in the vineyards, together with a long-term commitment to sustainable agriculture and “green” winemaking practices.

The Producer –

Over twenty five years ago, Dan Odfjell the Norwegian Armador (ship owner) fell in love with a small corner of the Maipo Valley. Serendipity would later show that he had found land in Chile’s premium red wine producing valley, where vitis vinifera has been cultivated for 400 years. While most of the other top producers in Chile are working with relatively young vines, Odfjell have forged an unique reputation based on rediscovering the forgotten wealth of Chile’s winemaking past. At the time this was considered a very eccentric move but now the interest in these old sites has grown exponentially, in no small part thanks to Odfjell. Crafting wines that fully maximise the great potential of the region, this year having joined the new association of Vignadores de Carignan, Odfjell are committed to sustainable agriculture and green winemaking practices, the vineyards are all cultivated organically and biodynamically and are working towards certification.

Food Matching

It’s great on its own as an aperitif and is an excellent match for shellfish.
