Intro to Pagos de Galir Mencia –
Pagos de Galir Mencia is full of concentrated red fruits with sweet spice and balsamic notes on the nose. Soft tannins and a rounded fresh finish complemented by subtle oak flavours.
Full tasting note and wine making –
Pagos de Galir Mencia is vibrant dark cherry red in colour and has a great aromatic intensity of fresh red fruits, balsamic and sweet spice. The red fruit aromas are balanced by subtle toasted notes from 6 months ageing in oak. Silky tannins and a soft fruity finish, this is a well-structured, mouth-wateringly fresh red wine.
Soils in these high altitude vineyards with a 30% inclination are mostly slate. The 2019 vintage for Mencia grapes took place in the third week of September, characterised by a dry year with low yields and late maturation. Cold maceration of the grapes in scale fridges and of the must 48 hours before alcoholic fermentation. Destemmed but not pressed in order to preserve the primary aromas. 8 months barrel ageing in French and American oak.
The producer –
n 1879 C.V.N.E. was founded by Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa in Rioja. 140 years later C.V.N.E. is still controlled by the descendants of the founders. By 1900, the winery had an extraordinary ageing capacity of 80,000 bottles, which was most unusual at the time, as most wineries sold their wines as soon as possible.
C.V.N.E. is still controlled by the direct descendants of the founding family, now in its fifth generation. Victor Urrutia is the CEO OF C.V.N.E. Victor is a direct descendant of the founding brothers and is closely involved with the day to day management of our business. He is passionate in his desire to combine traditional winemaking methods with modern innovation. Victor describes his mission at CVNE as twofold: ‘my ancestors worried about one thing only: making the best possible wine. I have added another concern to this (very short) list: to make our wines known across the world’.
C.V.N.E. has three wineries in Rioja: Cune, Viña Real and Contino. In June 2017, C.V.N.E. purchased the renowned Catalonia winery Roger Goulart, dating back to 1882, located in the world-famous D.O. Cava region. The latest addition to their portfolio in 2018 is the Virgen del Galir, winery located in the premium D.O Valdeorras in Galicia.

Delivery Charges
Delivery in St Albans is FREE for orders over £85, for orders less than £85 the charge is £5.
Postal delivery of tasting tickets and vouchers is also FREE if this option is chosen.
Our standard national delivery charge is £10 and is FREE for all orders over £250. The standard delivery is next day for all orders placed by 12noon and the following day for all orders received later than that.
Arrangements in case you’re out at the time of delivery
Please leave clear instructions in the special instructions section on the checkout page so the wine can be left in a safe place to suit you. As our delivery service requires a signature then if your wine is not signed for it is left at your risk and losses are not replaceable. If instructions are not left a card will be put through your door asking you to contact the carrier to arrange re-delivery or collection within 2 days.

For charges applicable for delivery to remote addresses such as the Scottish Highlands and Islands please note that different charges apply and these are clearly shown at checkout. The charges are per case of 12 x 75cl bottles and the delivery time will be a little longer due to the location.
