Intro to Te Mata Bullnose Syrah –

Te Mata Bullnose Syrah from Hawkes Bay has a fragrant nose featuring damson plums and blackberry liqueur, with touches of vanilla and spice. The palate is ripe, juicy and elegant with fresh and preserved raspberry and blackberry fruit flavours.

Full tasting note and wine making –

Te Mata Bullnose is opulent, lush and perfectly balanced and it rolls out of the glass in waves of mocha, oriental spice, plum and dark, dark cherry. Lavishly textured with concentrated layers of raspberry and blackcurrant. Elegant, faultless, a wine of great finesse.
First planted in 1990, the Bullnose Vineyard’s old red iron soils produce Te Mata Estate’s finest Syrah. This wine has distinct floral and spice aromas, rich flavours of plum, raspberry and blackberry, with a velvety texture. It went through traditional and malolactic fermentation and then into a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barriques for 15 months maturation followed by egg-white fining, blending and then bottling in September.
Vineyard partners Michael Morris and Peter Cowley named Bullnose after an early Morris Cowley car, nicknamed Bullnose due to its distinctive radiator. The bull emblem that appears on the label is drawn from the car’s radiator crest.

Established in 1896, Te Mata Estate remains family owned, producing internationally recognised wines exclusively from its Hawkes Bay vineyards. Under the direction of John Buck, Te Mata Estate has, over nearly thirty years, produced a stunning array of red and white wines including famous labels such as Coleraine, Awatea Cabernets/Merlots, Bullnose Syrah, Elston Chardonnay, Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc and Zara Viognier. In 2012 Te Mata Estate launched Estate Vineyards, a collection sourced exclusively from their own vineyards and blended to represent the best qualities of their variety.
Te Mata Estate is committed to improving its performance in terms of environmental, social and economic sustainability through the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand programme.
