Intro to Teliani Valley Saperavi –

Teliani Valley Saperavi is a vibrant crunchy and juicy wine that might just become everyone’s new favourite wine!

Full tasting note and wine making –

Teliani Valley Saperavi is made from the Saperavi grape that is often compared to Malbec, Cabernet Franc and even Gamay depending on how it is made. In this case we are firmly in Malbec territory – a strikingly deep purple colour, bright and juicy with fresh crunchy dark berry flavours and perfectly balanced acidity. Refreshing, yet soft and mouthfilling flavours.

This wine is made from Georgias’s indigenous grape variety the Saperavi, which is hand harvested from vineyards in the Kakheti Region of East Georgia. It undergoes seven-ten days of fermentation on skins. Once fermentation is complete the skins are removed from the wine prior to filtration and bottling. 50,000 bottles were produced.

The producer –

Teliani is an old winery dating back to the 1800s and they have survived the various incursions into Georgia from their northern neighbours including the Soviet invasion of the 1920s. They still produce a lot of wine for the Russian market – they would be stupid not to – but they are astute enough to not want this to be the sum of what they do, and self-aware enough to imagine what could be possible if they develop the right philosophy for their business. They have a team of innovative young winemakers who are given the time, equipment, fruit and support they need to create really exciting things, and we think some of that is evident in the selection we have here.

Bordeaux winemaker Antoine Mosano was invited to the wine cellar in the 1880s. Mosano has been working in Georgia for 9 years and was the first to start working on combining Georgian and European grape varieties and winemaking technologies. At his initiative, many varieties of French grapes were brought to Georgia and cultivated.

Currently, the vineyards of “Teliani Valley” are cultivated in the lands of Alexander Chavchavadze. They continue the tradition and offer customers wines made from ancient grape varieties, made with traditional and Georgian-European technologies.

Drink with –

The wine pairs well with spicy sausage stew, a juicy burger and barbequed meats.
