Intro to Tyrells HVD Semillon –

Tyrells HVD Semillon is a very fine wine showing how delicious quality Semillon is with some age…

Full tasting note and wine making –

Tyrells HVD Semillon – this vintage shows both power and finesse. Freshness on the nose, complexity on the back palate, and now in its transition stage from primary to secondary flavours. Waxy and honey toast, with good length.

The vines in the HVD (Hunter Valley Distillery) vineyard were planted in 1908 and form the “Sign Post Block”. The vineyard lies between two small creeks that are fed from a spring in the Brokenback range and are light sandy loam soils. Impeccably balanced with its strong, citrus characters and a crisp acid structure which leaves the wine with a clean finish.

Situated between two dry creek beds, the HVD (Hunter Valley Distillery) vineyard has ideal soils for Semillon; free draining sandy soils over coarse river sand. The vines are dry grown and were planted in 1908. Vintage Conditions
A dry winter and spring was broken by good rains in early December which helped the vines immensely. Moderate summer temperatures and some rain during the harvest period meant hand sorting of the fruit in the vineyard, to ensure all fruit that arrived at the winery was in pristine condition.
Hand-picked in the early hours of the morning, the fruit was lightly crushed and pressed before a relatively cool fermentation. Then the wine spent minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.

The producer –

Proudly family-owned for 160 years, Tyrrell’s is a wine company rich in history and pioneering achievements. The Tyrrell family’s association with the grape began with Edward Tyrrell in 1858. Today his legacy lives on through the fourth and fifth generation of the family who collectively manage one of Australia’s oldest and most highly regarded wineries. Tyrrell’s has grown over a century and a half to become one of Australia’s most prestigious winemakers. Today the company is managed by fourth generation owner Bruce Tyrrell and his children, John, Chris and Jane. Over the years the family have been instrumental in changing the face of the Australian wine industry. The family’s many successes include introducing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to the Australian wine category, and their ‘Vat 47’ was Australia’s first commercial Chardonnay. They were also one of the first wineries to expand out of the Hunter Valley, setting up vineyards 160kms north of Sydney and 100kms north of Melbourne. Innovation and leadership are two of the key attributes of the family, and have been instrumental in securing Tyrrell’s position as one of Australia’s leading producers. Today the family are also producers of Australia’s most awarded white wine, the ‘Vat 1 Hunter Valley Semillon’, which has won an astounding 5,475 medals and 332 trophies.

A lovely foo wine – great with cheeses, fish and meat dishes with sauces, though not too creamy
