Intro to Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz –

Wirra Wirra RSW is made from 100% Shiraz and has aromas of dark fruits with dark bitter chocolate, cedar and earth on the palate is rich with raspberries, blue fruits and black berries infused with spice and chocolate. It has a wonderful balance between vibrancy, power and elegance.

Full tasting note and wine making –

This wine was named after Robert Strangways Wigley, a noted South Australian eccentric and state cricketer who established Wirra Wirra in 1894. It has wonderful balance between vibrancy, power and elegance and will age for 15 – 20 years. After fermentation and pressing, the wine is transferred to oak barrels before completing malolactic fermentation. Then they were racked and after 14 months of oak maturation the individual vineyard components were barrel selected to form the base wine and returned to oak for three months maturation in French oak casks of which 30% were new. They are aged as individual vineyard parcels then blended for an additional 3 months in old French oak.

The producer –

Gregg Trott, the original owner had a philosophy was ‘Never give misery an even break, nor bad wine a second sip. You must be serious about quality, dedicated to your task in life, especially winemaking, but this should all be fun.’ And this is followed by the current team.
The Wirra Wirra vineyards are in McLaren Vale in South Australia where the Mediterranean climate is ideal for grape growing producing regionally distinctive wines. They also own vineyards in Adelaide Hills in the Mount Lofty Ranges just East of Adelaide where the altitude enables them to produce elegant cool climate wines with finesse in Lenswood and Piccadilly.
The Wirra Wirra winemaking philosophy is to the let grapes shine and reflect their quality. They are also very environmentally aware and practice sustainable agriculture conserving water, planting 3000 trees and reduced chemical use. Their vineyards near the winery are certified Biodynamic.

Drink with –

Slow cooked beef brisket with root vegetable mash and steamed greens is an ideal match for this wine.
