Intro to Yalumba the Menzies Coonawarra Cabernet –

Yalumba the Menzies Coonawarra Cabernet Australia is made from fine Cabernet fruit from Coonawarra with fine ripe tannins and glorious blackcurrant fruit notes make this a stylish wine.

Full tasting note and wine making –

The Menzies Coonawarra Cabernet is made by small batch winemaking maintaining the integrity of each vineyard parcel through vinification and initial barrel maturation. Selected parcels of grapes are given extended skin contact before pressing to add more complexity. The wine matured for 18 months in 13% new French barrels, 3% new American hogsheads, 3% new Hungarian hogsheads and the balance in 1 year and older American, French & Hungarian barrels.
The bouquet has berry and plum fruits with a sea spray tang that is typical of Yalumba The Menzies. The palate is full bodied and rich with a textured mid-palate and a lengthy finish. The wine drinks beautifully now and will continue to evolve for at least fifteen years.
Since 1987, the Hill-Smith family has counted itself amongst those fortunate enough to produce an estate grown Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. To own a vineyard upon that famous terra rossa soil over limestone is the holy grail of all Cabernet Sauvignon purists. Experimentation, innovation, minimalist intervention and small batch winemaking has resulted in The Menzies reputation as one of the best wines of its type to emerge from the region – a wine of longevity, elegance and structure.

The producer –

The history of Yalumba goes back to 1849 when Samuel Smith set sail with his family for Adelaide and then onto Angaston to work for a fruit grower and where he planted his first vines. In 1852 he returned from the gold fields with enough money to buy additional land and plant more vines. This was the start of Yalumba, a wine producing company that continues to thrive and grow. In 1966 the first vintage of the eponymous wine The Signature Shiraz Cabernet blend was made honouring Samuel Smith at the heart of this family owned company.
In 1985 Robert Hill Smith took over as Managing Director, bought out all the other family shareholders, and insisted that the company major on growing grape varieties matched to terroir for which the company is renowned. In 1998 with the help of Louisa Rose Yalumba launched wines made from Viognier and she has become the world’s most influential Viognier winemaker.
Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, that has made the Australia making it a wine success story.
