Intro to Turckheim Grand Cru Brand Riesling –
Turckheim Grand Cru Brand Riesling Alsace France is a classy dry wine from this exemplary cooperative. It is typical of a fine Riesling with elegant pear and citrus fruit that broadens and gets richer in the mouth yet the finish is crisp and racy.
Full tasting note and wine making –
Riesling Brand from Turckheim is an archetypal Alsace Riesling: fine and dry with elegant pear and citrus fruit on the nose underpinned by kerosene aromas. The palate is broader with rich fruits and a crisp, steely finish. Grapes are sourced from delineated Grands Crus – areas of exceptional granitic soils where only Riesling, Muscat d’Alsace, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer can be planted. The Grand Cru of Brand takes its name from the German word for fire. Due to its southerly aspect, this vineyard benefits from remarkably high levels of sunshine which in turn results in grapes with high levels of ripeness and richness.
The producer –
For 60 years, Cave de Turckheim has been operating from the pretty village of Turckheim north west of Colmar. It is widely regarded as one of the best co-operatives in the world and has established itself as a quality-focused producer. Michel Lihrmann has been their senior winemaker for over 2 years. Favouring the dryer styles of Alsace wines, he strongly believes that Alsace wines should be varietally typical and express pure fruit flavours.
Cave de Turckheim’s winery benefits from state-of-the-art equipment and now produces around 8 to 10 million bottles per year across an extensive range, from the excellent value Cave Tradition range up to individual Grand Cru varietals as well as Crémants dAlsace and Vendange Tardive dessert wines. Benefitting from the regions uniquely dry terroir, Cave de Turckheim has successfully implemented viticulture raisonnée; members have reduced the use of pesticides, soil treatments, water and energy consumption which ensures the sustainable production of high quality grapes with minimal environmental impact.
Drink with –
Classically paired with seafood or, in the true spirit of Alsace, with rich pork and cheese dishes such as Choucroute or Tarte Flambée, otherwise known as Flammküche.
