French wines are still the benchmark for wine making around the world despite the plethora of wines available from the Southern Hemisphere. Alsace: despite the strong German traditions of the region the wines are mostly dry and fruity from a range of mainly white grape varieties.

Bordeaux: the Bordeaux blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc make very balanced and elegant wines that often need time in cask to show their colours and will age well.

Burgundy: the world’s best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir based wines are made here with aging potential too.

Chablis: fabulous minerally Chardonnays are the hallmark of this region

Champagne: fantastic traditional wines with a worldwide reputation

Loire: this is Sauvignon Blanc’s natural home and a diversity of wine styles emerge from this region’s appellations together with the joys of Chenin Blancs range from dry to luscious dessert wines.

Rhone Valley: superb Syrahs from the north of the appellation with great blends such as Chateauneuf du Pape in the south.

South West: best known for the wines of Languedoc Roussillon many of which are individual and include Picpoul, Limoux, Corbieres, et al.
